Nevertheless, as you mention, the output video is still exactly what we need.

Hi @Order040. This project very much requires a desktop or laptop computer running Windows, macOS or Linux for two effectively insurmountable reasons. Fundamentally, Steam Link is a means to shift content running on a computer away from a conventional monitor toward a mobile device…Therefore, to make this work you need both key components, namely the computer and the mobile device, and if you take either away, the project instantly fails. As a secondary consideration, Steam itself is a platform for playing games on a computer, and users assemble a library of games to be played on a computer. If they don’t have a computer, it follows that they won’t have a library of Steam games to play. So, what options does that leave for a mobile-only user? In terms of Steam Link itself, absolutely nothing. You’ll need to turn to either the App Store on Apple devices or Google Play (or a third-party alternative) on Android for titles which will play natively on your device. But, we have a question for you…We’re curious to know what you’re trying to achieve here. Given that this project is entirely dependant upon using a computer, how are you intending to use it without one? Or, put another way, how would you answer the question you asked?

We can see why Steam Link would appeal to you @Order040, but without a desktop or laptop, this won’t offer a solution to your current situation. Hope you find a workaround.

For anyone new to the topic, the get_iPlayer wiki (see github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/faq#recording for full source) mentions the following in relation to default quality: “get_iplayer does not record FHD/1080p video by default even if it is available for a TV programme. The resulting media files may be very large and the video quality may not be better than HD/720p. Use --tv-quality=fhd,hd,sd,web,mobile to prefer FHD video if available..” So how exactly do we ensure full HD (1080p) where available? To briefly summarise, we’ll look at how we would record a recent episode of Doctor Who at “Full HD” resolution, which is defined as 1080p. @@TechFixFlix That made no difference. I entered "--tv-quality=fhd" and still downloads in 720p. This did not fix my issue...

Can you tell us the full command you used - not just the end part. If we can see what you’re trying to download and the full command you’re using, it might be clearer to us why it’s not working for you. For example, the source material might not be available in a resolution higher than 720p. If you worked through the example we provided in our last reply, you’ll see that the method does work, so this issue is either the consequence of the specific video you’re trying to download, or the way you’re entering the commands…so to help you further we’d need to know your full command.

Actually, there’s also a really big clue in your first comment. If you look at the list of available qualities mentioned in the error message, it lists HD, but crucially not FHD, which strongly indicates to us that the specific video you’re trying to download is limited to 720p, and that this is a limitation of the source video, rather than a flaw in the command. Put another way, this is the best you will do for this particular video, but others will be available in 1080p using exactly the same method.

The news isn’t good here. As shown at github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/releases get_iPlayer is only available for Windows P.C. and macOS, which, unfortunately means no version for the Chromebook.

Our experience suggests that both iPlayer and get_iPlayer are most unlikely to work outside of the U.K., and this is because the B.B.C. take active measures to geofence their content, making it available only to viewers physically located within the United Kingdom. Typically, users would look to a V.P.N. as a means to bypass this restriction, but again results here are mixed, and a V.P.N. which works on one occasion may not be as successful the following day. For this reason, we always advise against spending money on a V.P.N. specifically in an attempt to access iPlayer content. If you already have a V.P.N., you might like to try it to see if you have any success. Alternatively, you might like to try free options like AwardVPN (see award-vpn.com/download for download). This will allow you to see whether you can access via V.P.N. without specifically subscribing to a service which may not work with iPlayer.

Hi @shanefrassato4734. You definitely didn’t miss something here, but there is a problem beyond the control of X-Mouse which limits the number of configurable buttons. Specifically, X-Mouse works by piggybacking upon a Windows feature called “mousehooks,” and the limiting factor here is that Microsoft only made provision to support no more than five mouse buttons natively. X-Mouse, and any similar application relying upon mousehooks inherits this limitation, and any future improvement will be entirely dependent upon Microsoft expanding its provision for additional buttons (which it simply hasn’t done in the many years we’ve been covering X-Mouse). We always recommend Googling your mouse manufacturer and model name to see if the manufacturer has a web page with a “Support” or “Downloads” section from which you can download drivers and/or a configuration utility. All manufacturers know that Windows can only support up to five buttons natively, so, if their device has more, the onus is on them to support their hardware with appropriate software.

Hi @satellitegiallo. The method shown in this video uses VirtualBox to create PrimeOS as a virtual machine running within your native Windows desktop, meaning that if you can see your Windows desktop, you should also see the PrimeOS interface. The only exception which we’ve seen to date is the one we specifically mention and resolve at 05:11 in our video. If your issue is anything other than this, please provide us with fuller information (e.g. what do you mean by “display” what do you mean by “damaged” and how do these issues impact specifically upon running PrimeOS and not your wider system?)

The first point we need to make here is that this query is well outside of the scope of our video, which was rooted in a scenario in which PrimeOS was running as a virtual machine within Windows. We also didn’t give any specific consideration to display options, as again our assumption was that the default would suffice. However, your query reminds us that the real world is never that straightforward, so on we go… We’d always advocate eliminating all of the obvious potential causes of ghosting, as set out in this list: www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/monitor-ghosting-fix and we’d always look to inspect and replace the ribbon cable connecting the main board to the display (for those users who feel confident in disassembling and reassembling their device). If you’ve tried that, or if you’re not comfortable attempting it, you’re probably going to need to look into kernel boot parameters. The starting point for macOS users is to download the macOS installer from github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer_macos/releases/download/3.35.0/get_iplayer-3.35.0-macos-x86_64.pkg Once downloaded, it should be installed just as you would any other macOS app. After that, it’s remarkably similar to the Windows version. There are several other useful resources to help you with this. Firstly, there’s our guide on how to use the graphical user interface, removing the need to use typed commands. Hi @xDrac. Ultimately, you’ll need to match the version you’re intending to install with the license key you own, but the method of doing so is more flexible than it initially appears. Our preferred method is not to enter any licence key during the initial installation of Windows. Below the box where you’d typically enter the licence key during installation, you’ll see a small hyperlink labelled “I don’t have a product key.” Clicking that link takes you to a screen from which you can select any version of Windows. You’ll want to select the version which marches the licence key you have. You can then proceed with the installation in full. Once you’ve successfully installed Windows, head to the “Activation” section in Windows settings, then click “Change Product Key” and enter the product key which you’d like to use (naturally, this needs to match the version installed). Also, if the machine you’re using has previously been activated with a license key, it will automatically activate based on the stored hardware profile.

We’ve tested it today (29th May, 15:00) on the latest episode of Doctor Who using the following command: get_iplayer www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001zpzs/doctor-who-season-1-4-73-yards We can report that our download worked as expected, and was not blocked. Should you experience any issues when downloading, we would always recommend: 1 )..Checking with an entirely different programme to rule out issues with a specific video or file. 2 )..Using the graphical user interface to download content, as shown in our video at ruclips.net/video/bdSHTkd1bwc/видео.html 3 )..Updating to the latest version of get_iPlayer. At the time of writing, you can find the latest version for Windows P.C. at github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer_win32/releases/download/3.35.0/get_iplayer-3.35.0-windows-x64-setup.exe and the current macOS version at github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer_macos/releases/download/3.35.0/get_iplayer-3.35.0-macos-x86_64.pkg 4 )..Sometimes the configuration of a particular P.C. may be the issue. If you have access to a secondary device, it may be worth running get_iPlayer on that device. 5 )..Given the geofencing of content enforced by the B.B.C., only viewers physically located within the United Kingdom can realistically expect to be able to access the content, and using a V.P.N. will not guarantee access to the content. U.K. users may wish to disable any V.P.N. to avoid inadvertent blocking. Hope you find a solution to this.

@@TechFixFlix The problem turned out to be temporary. However, every time I open get_iplayer in recent weeks, I get a message announcing that the schedule for BBC1 cannot be downloaded, yet PIDs for BBC1 programmes copied from the BBC site work as normal. I should also add that I had recently (perhaps foolishly) installed Kamo on the affected laptop. I have since changed some of its settings which appeared to be the source of the problem I first mentioned.

It’s amazing how often temporary or seemingly unrelated issues can impact upon otherwise straightforward operations, and we’re glad you found a way through the initial difficulties. If it’s any consolation, we’re also seeing the message advertising that the schedule cannot be downloaded. It appears to be a known issue, and has been reported at github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/issues/471, with a comment from two weeks ago which reads “Ignore the error for now. It will be removed in the next release. BBC One programme schedules will still be indexed from the local variants. For that to work, don't use --refresh-exclude-groups{-radio,-tv}, and/or remove any of those options from your saved settings. There is no real reason to use those options these days." As for Kamo, you’ve correctly reasoned that it was the source of your initial issue. Essentially, the Kamo feature which masks your location to protect privacy unfortunately conflicts with the stipulation that iPlayer content be served only to viewers physically located in the United Kingdom. If iPlayer cannot detect, or is suspicious about, your physical location, it will refuse to deliver content.

Unfortunately, we have to agree with you entirely on this point @thomasg627. As we've mentioned many times before in the comments for this video, the B.B.C. actively geofence their content, making it available only to users physically located within the United Kingdom, and implement measures designed to counteract the impact of V.P.N.s. In those rare instances where a V.P.N. has been able to grant access to iPlayer content, users have reported that subsequent attempts may be blocked, meaning that a V.P.N. cannot be relied upon to consistently provide access to the content. Unless the B.B.C. reverse this policy decision, regrettably this largely restricts access purely to U.K. residents. Of course, this is tied to the B.B.C.'s funding model, which relies upon effectively compulsory payments made by every U.K. household toward the publicly-funded broadcaster, and the B.B.C. are essentially obligated to protect that funding mechanism and ensure that only those who pay for the content are able to access it. Since publishing this video, we have repeatedly stressed our opinion that this model is not fit for the 21st century and the modern global media landscape in which content should be accessible to all geographical sectors without restriction. Ideally, the B.B.C. should find a way to effectively monetize this and realise the financial value of their content in overseas markets. However, they appear unable or unwilling to move with the times, creating a situation in which viewers will ultimately turn to alternative sources to obtain that content, or simply shun the B.B.C. in favour of media which can be accessed more readily. Frustratingly, we have been making this argument for over half a decade, and the position has remained entirely unchanged throughout this time. None of which helps a potentially vast overseas audience.

@@TechFixFlix The BBC should take a look at public TV in Germany which has the exact same funding as the BBC has, but doesn't even require a subscription to access their content online. In rare occasions some content may be geoblocked when the copyright of something is owned by a 3rd party, but in general absolutely all their content is available entirely for free including download option worldwide and even their geoblocked content can be accessed via VPN, because for legal reasons geoblocking without also blocking VPNs is sufficient. They are so open about it that you can find things like the entire series of "Verbotene Liebe" here on YT, all seasons all 6500+ episodes all for free. Same thing for many other TV stations all over the world, like El Trece TV from Argentina. The reason is as simple as, all households in the country of the TV station are paying for the station, independent of how many additional viewers elsewhere in the world can watch the content, the income of the TV station doesn't increase by locking out the rest of the world, it just makes their content less popular and often entirely unknown outside the country. It's as simple as, if all the people of all the countries pay for their public TV, what harm is there in making all the content of all the public TV worldwide available worldwide? The people pay the same, the stations have the same income, only the people have much more content available for free. The true reason behind this is, if all the content of all the public TV were available worldwide, private corporations like Netflix would lose part of their income and that cannot be in a world favoring private enterprises over public services. If all that is still not reason enough, the totally free access to it from anywhere in the world means, there are no pirated copies of their content, no entirely external people making money with software to get around the blocking, no hosters making money by providing space to store files, etc. Hilarious it becomes when you have a TV tuner connected to a satellite dish inside your computer, because then you have side by side the software of the TV tuner including digital videorecorder where you can legally watch and record everything entirely unrestricted and a browser window aside saying this program cannot be viewed in your location.

We’ll add this to the list of things done better in Germany @thomasg627, and, from a viewer’s perspective, it seems like insanity that something like the German model you describe cannot be implemented here in the U.K. The B.B.C. has become too entrenched in the politics and bureaucracy of the previous century, and has singularly failed to capitalise upon the opportunities presented by the modern digital economy. The pace of change is glacial, and there seems to be no apparent inclination to abandon tradition to meet the demands of the audience. The trouble here is that the B.B.C. simply aren’t the gatekeepers of their content. Piracy is incredibly easy, and it’s much easier for overseas users to access B.B.C. content from a source other than the B.B.C., which may (or may not) significantly reduce the quality of the content presentation, but will certainly reduce B.B.C. revenue to zero. The B.B.C. might block a user’s access to content sourced legitimately from the B.B.C., but it won’t stop users finding alternative means of access, because it’s incredibly easy to do so. The B.B.C. could opt to profit from worldwide access to its output, but instead chooses to ignore consumer demand and consequently fails to profit, and this is a shame, because fundamentally most British people would really like the B.B.C. to succeed. A worldwide revenue stream from iPlayer could help either with the funding of new programming, or (even more popular) help to freeze or reduce the Licence Fee, as well as helping to keep overseas viewers happy…and those overseas viewers wouldn’t necessarily need to pay for that content either, if the B.B.C. instead opted to cash in on advertising revenue from overseas markets.

@@TechFixFlix As I said above, there are not zero but only very few pirated copies of content that is available for free from the TV station, try finding a copy of a movie that has been in German public TV 2 years ago while the websites keep the content online only 1 year, you can't, it doesn't exist until public TV decides to show the movie again, after which it will again be available for free from them for another year and at no point do pirates see any advantage in copying it. BBC content is only available in pirated versions BECAUSE it is geoblocked. From another point of view, the BBC is a public service, it is paid for by the public, therefore whatever they produce is property of the people (just like all results of state financed scientific research are which is the reason why there are no copyrights on scientific discoveries), not offering an official download option already violates the property rights of the owners and not offering a download option abroad violates the property rights of UK citizens who are temporary located abroad. Furthermore forbidding or disabling the rightful owner of something to share that something with anyone they want to also violates the owners property rights. If that's still not enough, here's one example of how public TV ought to operate to be a true public service. In Germany as well private corporations are trying to fight public TV and they managed to implement the 1 year max availability so that public TV cannot indefinitely keep their content online. The "flagship" of public TV in Germany is a series that has had 27 seasons plus 2 spin offs by now, titled "In aller Freundschaft". In order to keep all the episodes of all the seasons of that series online literally all public tv stations in Germany keep repeating seasons so that about 90% are available at all times and it never takes more than a year until it gets repeated again on some channel and at a time where nobody watches, just to renew the 1 year availability. That is what a public service which in fact serves the public is all about. Fun fact aside, there's one episode that isn't available on the website of public TV because there's an actor in it who was found guilty of something really bad so that the TV stations decided to delete that episode from their archives and ..... guess what ..... there's an almost countless amount of copies of that episode all over the web where 3rd parties make money with it.

That’s a really interesting read @thomasg627, and it did set us thinking that the B.B.C. haven’t really explained their rationale to a domestic or international audience. There are very few people in Britain (ourselves included) who could adequately articulate precisely why the B.B.C. have geofenced their content, and we seem to simply accept the status quo and keep the content to ourselves. If the debate is instead framed as “why are we paying a compulsory licence fee when the B.B.C. could reasonably fund their activities through either direct episode/series microsales, subscriptions or straightforward advertising revenue from overseas markets?” this would stir public debate here, because for all we like the idea of the B.B.C., we’re not overly keen on being compelled to pay for it. Anyway, this why Germany is forward-looking, and we’re thoroughly stuck in the past.

Hi @BetterThanChallenge. Just like you, one of the first things we do with a new installation is to change the default save location. We do this by entering a single command at the get_iPlayer prompt. The command syntax is: get_iplayer --prefs-add --output "[PATH TO YOUR FOLDER]" which, in your case, would translate to something like: get_iplayer --prefs-add --output "D:\" for the root of your D: drive. Alternatively, if you had a folder called “iPlayer Recordings” in your D: drive, the command would be: get_iplayer --prefs-add --output " D:\iPlayer Recordings” and so on. Hope this helps.

This is very much an evergreen tutorial, and get_iPlayer in mid-2024 works in exactly the same way as it did when we originally published our tutorial back in August 2019. Indeed, it had worked in much the same way for some time before we created our video. It really just does exactly what it needs to.

You should be able to essentially duplicate the steps shown in our tutorial video, and simply customise those steps to help you take a screenshot: 1 )..Define the environment in which the button mapping is to apply (i.e. a specific app, a specific game or everywhere). See 02:22 in our video where we demonstrate this. 2 )..Identify the mouse button you’d like to press to take the screenshot. Make sure that X-Mouse can “see” the button, and turns the corresponding entry orange in the main X-Mouse window. See 02:03 in our video where we demonstrate this. 3 )..Identify the combination of keys which will take a screenshot in your chosen app or game. There are a number of ways to achieve this, but the combination we’d use first is the Windows Key plus the Print Screen key. In X-Mouse, you’d write this as: {LWIN}{PRTSCN} The screenshot will be automatically saved to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Pictures (i.e. your Pictures folder). Please note that your screen dims slightly as the screenshot is taken. If this method doesn’t work for you, or you don’t like it for any reason, there are many screenshot utilities available for download, and you could simply change the key combination to suit whatever utility you’d like to use. 4 )..Map that key combination into the “Simulated Keystrokes” field in X-Mouse. See 03:31 in our video where we demonstrate this. This means that every time you press the mouse button you have selected, it will send the keyboard shortcut {LWIN}{PRTSCN} which will take a screenshot and save it to your Pictures library. Apply and save your changes, then go to test. See 04:06 in our video where we demonstrate this. Hope this helps.

Once you’ve defined Photoshop as the environment in which the mapping will apply, you could use {Alt}{LMB} to simulate Alt with left mouse button (or {Alt}{RMB} for the right mouse button). That would simulate a single instance of holding Alt whilst clicking. However, in circumstances where you want to press and hold, you’ll additionally need to look into the hold/repeat options described on Page 8 of the .pdf manual found at www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/x-mouse%20button%20control%20user%20guide.pdf

This is a commonly raised issue, and ssentially X-Mouse works by piggybacking on “mousehooks,” a feature built-in to Windows. However, Windows only makes provision for a maximum of five buttons, and X-Mouse inherits this limitation, along with any similar utility which makes use of the same technology. Where a manufacturer sells a mouse with more than five buttons, the onus is upon them to provide an appropriate driver and configuration software, otherwise the extra buttons don’t offer the additional functionality you would rightly expect. We would always advocate visiting the web site of your mouse manufacturer to check for software support. As a secondary issue, some mice offer functionality which is specifically encoded to the hardware, typically DPI buttons or buttons for specific media control operations, which are not reconfigurable at a software level. Naturally, these buttons are beyond the scope of X-Mouse and similar applications.

Unfortunately, as its name implies, get_iPlayer is exclusively associated with B.B.C. iPlayer content, and does not reference content from any other provider. We’d love to see a similar utility for ItvX, Channel 4, My5 and more curated U.K. content, and ideally a single app combining all of the major U.K. providers, although we’re currently unaware of any suitable app.

Whilst we haven’t personally used XMBC for gaming, there are certainly reports online describing systems which identify and ban users of tools of this type as a consequence of the competitive advantage they can clearly offer. This is why we see this as more of a productivity tool than a gaming option.

Sorry to hear that @ro6AXE. If it’s any consolation, these projects aren’t always straightforward, and can be influenced by issues on the host system, the receiving system or the network. We’d start by looking into the strength of your connection to the network, with wired being more stable than wireless for the host P.C. With a black screen, we’d also be keen to know whether your P.C. handles Steam’s Big Picture mode without issue on the host before Steam Link is activated. We’d then consider the Steam client software on the P.C. Is it up-to-date and otherwise working well? Also consider external factors like antivirus and firewall. This can be a tricky one, because there’s a significant number of potential causes. For a more scientific/targeted approach, you might want investigate the Steam logs, which maintain a very comprehensive record of Steam’s activities. You’ll find a directory called “logs” inside your Steam installation folder.

Both this video, and our other get_iPlayer video featuring the graphical user interface (see ruclips.net/video/bdSHTkd1bwc/видео.html for our video “Download From B.B.C. iPlayer - Get iPlayer Graphical User Interface”) have a certain timelessness, and indeed could have been made several years earlier, because get_iPlayer has remained incredibly stable with the passage of time. We could easily update the title or create a reworking of our original video, but this might feel slightly fraudulent, given that the essence of the video in largely unchanged, although, as you rightly note, viewers won’t necessarily expect to find a five-year-old video to remain valid.

Whilst iPadOS 13.4 introduced native keyboard and mouse support, this was severely limited last time we looked into it, primarily because the mouse effectively emulated touch input on iOS, rather than working in the manner you’d expect from a traditional P.C. mouse. Additionally, up and down key events weren’t being sent. The combination of these two limitations proved quite restrictive on many titles. This was around four years ago, and at that time we were aware of beta versions which might have addressed some of these limitations. We’d love to hear from anyone who uses “proper” P.C. games requiring traditional keyboard and mouse functions under Steam Link for iOS. What is the current position?

We completely agree @reecedrkae3833, and freely confess to having never purchased stamps from Amazon, nor even considered doing so. It seems somewhat convoluted to place an order via Amazon, then wait for it to be shipped, only then to post your item using the stamps received. It’s simply far easier to print off your own postage labels as shown in our tutorial, or, if you prefer traditional stamps, to purchase some as part of a grocery order at a supermarket or a local shop. We don’t really see a role for Amazon in this process, unless people are stocking up on stamps in bulk or including them as part of a wider Amazon order. Strangely though, anyone with the skill-set to shop at Amazon is more than technologically literate enough to use Royal Mail Click And Drop, so, if they also have a printer, they may as well opt for the convenience of printing their own at home, with the added security of absolutely eliminating the possibility of fraud. As a technology channel, our first choice is to avoid conventional mail in favour of online alternatives wherever practicable. If this isn’t possible (for example when sending a parcel) it would always be our preference to print our own postage. If we really had to buy physical postage, we’d obtain it from the supermarket, and we simply wouldn’t consider Amazon for this (even though there are plenty of other areas in which Amazon are our go-to). Also, just as an aside, with the Post Office Scandal still unfolding on a daily basis, it’s a little uncomfortable to see Royal Mail acting as victim, prosecutor, judge and jury in “Stampgate.”

This can be a highly specialised field, and depending upon how valuable the data is to you, it may well be worth the expense of hiring a firm specialising in data recovery to restore precious files. If the task can’t justify the expense, there are plenty of D.I.Y. solutions, some of which are free and some of which are paid-for. Hi @Mr-Khubaib. Apologies for the delay in responding. We needed to look this one up, and unfortunately the news isn’t good. In the discussion at forums.highrez.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4377#:~:text=XMBC%20can%27t%20detect%20and%20remap%20a%20double%20click%2C%20only%20individual%20button%20clicks the author of X-Mouse states “XMBC can't detect and remap a double click, only individual button clicks. XMBC uses Windows mouse hooks and at that point in the system, there is no concept of double clicks - windows does that later on (higher up in the message chain).” Unfortunately, this means that, without fundamental changes from Microsoft, double clicks of any button cannot be processed. Sorry the news isn’t better here.

Hi @glennbloke1965. In the video, we show how to download an individual episode by finding the web page for that episode and pasting its U.R.L. into the get_iPlayer command line. Just as each episode has a web page, so does each series and indeed each programme. So, there is potentially a three-tier hierarchy to each T.V. programme. Tier 1: Programme (Every series, Every episode). Tier 2: Series (Series 1, Series 2 etc). Tier 3: Episode (Episode 1, Episode 2 etc). Our video downloads a single episode, by using the U.R.L. from a web page in the third tier. You need to locate the web page which covers an entire series (Tier 2) or even every series (Tier 1). Alternatively, there are numerous typed commands which target full series, and we’d draw your attention to the following web page, which details each of these commands: github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/record
